Alexander Grinberg was born in Kharkov (Ukraine). In 1980 he completed studies at the Kharkov Music College and in 1985 graduated from I. Kovach's composition class at the Kharkov Art Institute.
In 1992 he took part in the Master Class with the composers Poul Ruders and Edison Denisov in Lerchenborg (Denmark).
From 1987 to 1995 he taught composition, music theory and history at a children’s music school in Kharkov. 1987–94 and 2000–03 he educated the same subjects at the Kharkov Music College. 1994–2003 he taught composition, instrumentation, music theory and special course in techniques of modern composition at the Kharkov Art Institute.
In March 2001 he was a Juror of the ukrainian students' composition competition "Gradus ad Parnassum".
He is a laureate of the I. Slatin prize of the Kharkiv city council (1999).
Since 2003 he has lived in Dusseldorf.
From 2005 to 2006 he was a musicology assistant in the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen. Since April 2008 he teaches music theory, piano and composition in the Marina Kheifets Music School Subito in Dusseldorf. Since May 2008 he works also as a self-employed music engraver and layouter.
